Talofa lava and warm greetings to all our people of American Sāmoa and our Pacific neighbors.
Today, we launch an important new chapter in how our territory approaches the complex and emerging issue of deep sea mining. The launch of this public education and outreach platform — deepseainfo.as.gov — reflects our commitment to ensuring that every family, every student, every chief, and every concerned citizen has access to current, accurate, and balanced information about this developing industry.
Our duty is clear. As leaders and stewards of these islands, our highest responsibility is the welfare of our people — especially our children, our grandchildren, and the generations yet to come. This responsibility extends beyond our shores to the broader welfare of Pacific peoples and the health of our shared ocean home. We cannot make decisions in the dark or be driven by fear or blind enthusiasm. We must seek knowledge with open eyes.
That is why American Sāmoa is taking the initiative to lead this education and outreach effort. We are moving forward in close partnership with our U.S. federal partners, including the Department of the Interior, and in collaboration with neighboring countries such as the Cook Islands. We believe that informed engagement, grounded in science, cultural values, and regional cooperation, is the only responsible path.
We will proceed with caution and curiosity, with duty and responsibility, and always with our eyes wide open. We encourage honest, open, and respectful discussion across our communities. Every voice matters — whether you carry traditional knowledge, scientific expertise, concerns for our marine environment, or hopes for economic opportunity. Let this platform be a place where facts are presented clearly and where meaningful dialogue can occur.
Our ocean has sustained us for thousands of years. Any path we consider must honor that sacred relationship and protect the future we want for our families. Knowledge is our foundation. Prudence is our guide. The well-being of our people and our Pacific region is our unwavering priority.
Fa’afetai tele lava. Thank you for your engagement and stewardship.
